Learn Blues Guitar: Review Of Playing Through The Blues
Introduction And Overview
Learning to play blues guitar is an immensely rewarding pursuit. It's especially cool to discover how the blues
greats create incredible blues licks and solos from such simple musical materials like pentatonic and blues scales.
They seem to be able to milk as much music as possible from so few notes. You gotta respect that!
I've bought a LOT of blues guitar books over the years, but Playing Through The Blues is the first online blues guitar course that I have purchased.
So I was really keen to find out just how good it was.

What I Liked About Playing Through The Blues
I've been going through the course over the last few days. Here are some things that I like about Playing
Through The Blues…
- Easy To Understand: I really liked the format of the lessons. Griff explains
everything in a simple and clear way. He doesn't complicate things with unneccesary theory.
- Mutiple Learning Styles Catered For: Griff has created the lessons using written
words, diagrams, audio and video. This allows guitarists to choose the learning method that they feel most
comfortable with.
- Based On Experience: Griff is an excellent player who can definitely play blues
guitar fluently. Because of this you can trust the information in the course. He teaches techniques, licks,
chord voicings and other materials that will help you in real-life playing situations (such as playing at jam
sessions or at gigs).
- No Unnecessary Information: Griff has done a great job of teaching only the essential
things that you need to learn. This will allow you to focus on the critical things that will get you playing
fluent blues sooner.
- Talks About How To Sound Authentic: A big part of sounding authentic as a blues lead
guitarist is learning to use both the minor blues and the major blues scales. I was really pleased that Griff
talked about this extensively because it's vital information to know.
What I Didn't Like About Playing Through The Blues
There were a couple of things that bugged me about this course…
- Headless Videos: On a LOT of the videos Griff's head wasn't visible. I found this a
bit distracting at times. I would have preferred that they pan back a bit when shooting the videos so that
Griffs head was included. This would have made the videos seem more like a one-on-one guitar lesson with
Griff.
- No Fingerings Or Picking Indications In Playing Through The Blues e-Book: Although
there was TAB for all the musical examples Griff played, there were no fingerings or picking indications shown
on the TAB. Although most blues guitar books that I've bought don't include these, I feel that if Griff had
included them it would make it even easier for people to learn the course material.
The Bottom Line

I'm giving Playing Through The Blues a rating of 4-stars. I didn't give it the maximum
rating of 5-stars because of the two criticisms I had for it.
With that said, I still feel that Playing Through The Blues is an excellent blues guitar course. So if you are
interested in becoming a competent blues guitarist, I can definitely recommend checking it out. Just click on the
